For Brazilian artist Hellena, music has never simply been a career choice—it has been woven into the fabric of her life from the very beginning. Growing up in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, in a household where creativity flourished, she was surrounded by artistic expression. Her father played drums in rock bands, while her mother worked as a visual artist, filling their home with music, paintings, books, and conversations that nurtured an early appreciation for the arts.

That environment naturally led Hellena toward music. At just seven years old, she enrolled in the State Conservatory of Music in her hometown, where she spent eight years studying recorder, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and bass. Although she enjoyed performing, it didn’t take long for her to discover where her true passion lay.

“I realized my strongest connection to music wasn’t through performance—it was through songwriting,” she explains.

Writing lyrics became her way of processing emotions and telling stories, a passion that continues to define her music today.

By the age of fourteen, Hellena had already formed her first band, Detention, performing hard rock and heavy metal across her home state. One of the band’s biggest milestones came when they opened for former Angra vocalist Edu Falaschi, an experience that confirmed music could become much more than a childhood dream.

Yet perhaps the most defining moment happened even earlier.

When she was just eleven years old, Hellena attended Rock in Rio with her mother. Watching artists like Metallica, Rob Zombie, and Ghost perform before thousands of fans changed everything.

“That day, I made a promise to myself: one day I would move to Rio de Janeiro and dedicate my life to music.”

Years later, she fulfilled that promise, relocating to Rio and embracing the uncertainty that comes with chasing a dream.

Finding Her True Identity

After years of releasing music under the name Hellena Almeida, the singer decided it was time to simplify things.

Now performing simply as Hellena, she sees the change as far more than a shortened stage name.

“It wasn’t about changing who I am it was about removing everything that felt unnecessary.”

The name represents a fresh beginning and a more authentic artistic identity, one that she believes finally reflects the artist she has spent years becoming. Her latest single, “Under The Lights,” marks the official beginning of this new chapter.

Sound tracking Life After Midnight

Rather than describing her music with traditional genre labels, Hellena prefers to describe it as an atmosphere.

She envisions her songs as “the soundtrack to the moments that happen after midnight,” where quiet thoughts become louder and nostalgia collides with hope. Her music embraces contrast—darkness and light, vulnerability and confidence, melancholy and adrenaline—all wrapped in cinematic soundscapes that invite listeners to lose themselves inside the music.

That philosophy extends beyond the music itself.

Inspired by artists such as Muse, Depeche Mode, New Order, Arctic Monkeys, and The Neighborhood, Hellena admires musicians who build complete artistic worlds rather than simply releasing songs. Her mother’s visual artwork has also shaped the way she imagines music, often envisioning colors, textures, lighting, and scenes before a song is even complete.

Storytelling Comes First

Every Helena song begins the same way—with words.

Lyrics always come first, often sparked by a sentence, an image, or an emotion that refuses to leave her mind. Once the story is written, she collaborates closely with fellow musicians and producers to build the sonic landscape around it.

For “Under the Lights,” Hellena wrote the lyrics while Bruno Jantorno Castro developed the instrumental foundation, with additional contributions from Pedro Ivo Souza de Paula and Guilherme Flauzino helping shape the song’s final atmosphere.

Although collaboration plays an important role, Hellena believes the emotional heart of every song begins with honest storytelling.

Growth Through Reinvention

Like many independent artists, Hellena admits that finding her artistic identity wasn’t a straight path.

For years, she believed constantly releasing music was the only measure of progress. Eventually, however, she chose to step away from releasing new material in order to focus on something deeper.

During that time, she completed a Marketing degree, immersed herself in branding, visual identity, songwriting, and musical exploration, all while asking herself a different question—not what songs she wanted to make, but what kind of artist she wanted to become.

Looking back, she no longer sees that period as lost time.

“I don’t see those years as a pause anymore. I see them as preparation.”

That period of reflection transformed her creative process and ultimately led to the music she’s making today.

More Than Music

While Hellena’s songs often explore themes of identity, nostalgia, loneliness, ambition, and personal transformation, her ultimate goal reaches beyond entertainment.

More than anything, she hopes listeners feel understood.

“We all spend so much time questioning ourselves,” she says. “If someone finishes listening to one of my songs feeling understood, inspired, or simply a little more hopeful than before, then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.”

Although her work begins with deeply personal experiences, she believes honest stories become universal, allowing listeners to discover their own meanings within the music rather than being told what to feel.

A New Era Begins

“Under The Lights” serves as more than just Hellena’s latest single—it introduces an entirely new artistic era.

The release lays the foundation for an ambitious rollout that includes another single arriving in September, visualizers, music videos, and her debut EP later this year. Plans are also underway for a small tour spanning late this year into early next year.

For Hellena, every release forms part of a larger story.

“My goal is to build a world that people can become part of.”

And success itself has taken on a different meaning.

While recognition and large audiences remain aspirations, she now measures success by something more lasting: creating honest music, building a genuine community, and never sacrificing authenticity for popularity.

As Hellena enters this exciting new chapter, one thing is certain—she isn’t interested in following trends or fitting neatly into a genre. Instead, she’s building something timeless, driven by curiosity, artistic evolution, and the hope that her music might help listeners better understand themselves.

As she puts it best:

“If nostalgia had a heartbeat and the night had a soundtrack, it would probably sound like Hellena.”
