Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day has reactivated his cover band The Coverups for a couple of California shows this week. They played West Hollywood’s The Roxy on Monday, in celebration of Marshall’s new signature Dookie amp, and on Thursday they headed to San Diego for SDCC’s annual Fandom Party, which happened at Hard Rock Hotel. Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, who is a presenter at the Eisner Awards tonight (7/23), joined them on one song, a rendition of David Bowie‘s “All The Young Dudes” (which Dickinson previously covered on his 1990 solo debut Tattooed Millionaire), and you can watch that below.
The Coverups’ San Diego set also featured their renditions of songs by Cheap Trick (“Hello There,” “Surrender”), Ramones (“I Wanna Be Sedated,” “Rockaway Beach”), Soul Asylum (“Sometime to Return”), Pretenders (“Message of Love”), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (“American Girl”), Buzzcocks (“Ever Fallen in Love [With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve]”), Modern English (“I Melt With You”), The Strokes (“Last Nite”), Nirvana (“Drain You”), The Clash (“Should I Stay or Should I Go”), Go-Go’s (“We Got the Beat”), Ozzy Osbourne (“Crazy Train”), Mötley Crüe (“Live Wire”), Poison (“Talk Dirty To Me”), another Bowie track (“Ziggy Stardust”), and more. See their setlist and more attendee-taken video below.
During their Monday set, The Coverups dedicated their rendition of “Drain You” to L7’s Jennifer Finch, who passed away at age 59 following her diagnosis with an aggressive form of brain cancer. Watch that below as well.
