Codefendants, the trio of Fat Mike (of NOFX), Sam King (of Get Dead), and rapper Ceschi release their sophomore album, Lifers, this Friday (4/3). Fat Mike produced it, and he says it includes a “Little Bossa Nova, little Hardcore, little Simon and Garfunkel…” We have an exclusive galaxy swirl vinyl variant, limited to 200 copies – get yours in the BV shop.
On the eve of the album’s release, we’re premiering the video for album track “The Fix.” Ceschi says, “It’s part fight song with ourselves…part ode to being a working musician lifer…that cycle of addiction, survival, purpose, and chaos that never really shuts off. Part 60s psych pastiche, part punk. Part 80s Max Headroom…with a touch of 90s Great America VHS…warped, absurd, flickering at the edge of insanity.”
He adds:
Lyrically I’m directly referencing The Monkees / Minor Threat while ranting about the chaos of being a lifelong musician…over these kitschy psych and new wave inspired B52s style organs that Sam (King) originally composed on MPC.
Originally we filmed a version all over Vegas with a crew of friends and family…it was a legendary day of shooting and we feel bad about not sharing it – but couldn’t quite capture the feeling we were chasing visually. We’ll probably share that version with supporters down the line.
We asked Old Soul Brother to build the visual world around that instead…and he took it somewhere else…this chaotic cut-and-paste hallucination. He’s mostly done work in the Hip Hop world including some visuals connected to Wu Tang orbit…he understands how to take fragments of forgotten & bizarro culture and make them feel alive again.
The video leans into that same idea as the song…taking these familiar, almost kitschy elements and pushing them until they feel a little off…a little unstable…like you recognize it but it’s already mutating while you’re looking at it. In some ways that’s the Codefendants approach to everything.
Sam adds, “The Fix video is what happens when the govt gives you pandemic money and you buy an mpc.” Watch it below.
Codefendants will be on tour through the fall, including dates of Sublime’s Me Gusta Festival, Louder Than Life, Aftershock, and more. They play Freehold, NJ’s Park Stage on June 19 with Sublime, Pepper, and The Movement. See all dates below.
