There’s no doubt that artificial intelligence has permanently altered the music landscape, in everything from how music is created and distributed to the way it’s consumed. As a result, nearly every major streamer has laid down some ground rules governing AI-generated music. These policies range from disallowing AI-generated work altogether to requiring metadata disclosing whether a track was AI-generated or AI-assisted.
Amazon Music doesn’t currently have a detailed public AI music policy, but it does host AI tracks with a focus on “catalog integrity,” and partners with labels against unlawful AI voice cloning and deceptive releases.
However, last year, the company integrated the AI song generator Suno—which has been the target of a significant copyright lawsuit filed by the major labels and the RIAA—into Alexa Plus. That further muddies the waters around what type of AI content is and is not allowed on the platform, and artists have reported facing quiet takedowns if their work raises any IP flags.
Apple Music started rolling out new metadata tags that will be required of labels/distributors to disclose when AI was used in creating art, from music to cover art and related assets. Currently, Apple has left it up to its partners to define what counts as “AI content,” and its policy is centered around transparency and labeling as opposed to a hard and fast ban.
Spotify’s updated AI policy adopts the DDEX standard so AI-assisted tracks can be properly labeled in credits. The company also launched a music spam filter targeting mass-produced or fraudulent content. Specifically, it bans unauthorized AI voice clones or other vocal impersonations, stating that such content is not allowed on the service and will be removed.
YouTube’s rules, which apply to the video platform as well as its music offering, treat “raw” AI audio involving minimal human input as low-value, often making such content ineligible for monetization or subject to removal. The policy emphasizes disclosure of AI use and “transformative human input,” such as commentary, performance, or storytelling. Non-disclosed or non-transformative AI music is likely to face either limited reach or demonetization, or removal altogether.
Bandcamp has explicitly banned music and audio “produced entirely or mainly by AI,” stating that tracks on the platform should be crafted by humans. The company reserves the right to remove music it suspects is wholly or heavily generative, and encourages users to report such content.
Deezer has been innovative in developing AI detection tools to identify and tag fully AI-generated songs, adding on-screen labels for transparency. Tagged AI tracks are excluded from algorithmic and editorial recommendations, and fraudulent AI streams—of which the company has detected many—are filtered out of royalty calculations.
Pandora has not released a concise public rule set around AI music; instead, the company has focused more on industry-wide concerns surrounding “AI slop” and recommendation quality on platforms in general. In practice, Pandora seems to be following the general trend of allowing AI-assisted content via distributors as long as rights are cleared and the content is not deceptive.
SoundCloud updated its Terms of Use to state that it will not use creators’ uploads to train generative AI models that replicate or synthesize another artist’s voice, music, or likeness without explicit, opt-in consent. This is focused more on catalog protection rather than banning AI content altogether; creators can still upload AI-assisted music, but the company commits to not feeding catalogs into generative training without permission.
Similarly to SoundCloud, Tidal states that music uploaded to its platform will not be used to train AI models, which aligns with existing artist protection efforts. The platform does use AI internally for moderation and metadata, and also offers an in-app AI lyrics generation tool for artists—but it has not published a hard ban on AI-assisted tracks from appearing in its catalog.
Qobuz released an “AI Charter” and is using a proprietary tool to detect and tag AI-generated content in its catalog. The service emphasizes a human-led editorial approach, similar to Deezer, committing to 100% human-curated recommendations and excluding “industrially generated AI content” from playlists and featured sections.
