For Luis Rivera, music has never been a side note — it’s been a lifeline. The child of Mexican immigrants, Rivera grew up on the South Side of Chicago, shaped by the cultural complexities and social inequities of his environment. Now both a practicing physician and a metal musician, Rivera proves that two seemingly divergent paths — medicine and music — can coexist, fuel each other, and even heal.
Rivera’s journey into the world of metal began with his uncles, who first introduced him to the thunderous riffs of Metallica and Iron Maiden. As he dove deeper, he discovered more extreme acts like Slayer, Morbid Angel, and Opeth, and found in their music a powerful outlet for emotions that were often difficult to name. “The energy of heavy metal felt like home,” he reflects. It gave shape to feelings of anger, confusion, and longing — emotions common to anyone trying to navigate identity, belonging, and injustice.
At 18, Rivera became the vocalist for his first band, Abolisher, which blended melodic and progressive elements of trash and death metal. He soon took up guitar as well, deepening his involvement in the band’s creative process. Abolisher performed across Chicago and the Midwest, even opening for Brazilian metal legends Angra. Their music was well-received in the metal press, and small label offers soon followed. But just as the band’s momentum was building, Rivera felt another calling — one he couldn’t ignore.
Even during his time in Abolisher, Rivera had been working as an electrician while preparing to pursue his true professional ambition: medicine. The intensity of medical school and residency forced him to put music on pause, but the creative fire never went out. Instead, it smoldered quietly — waiting.
Years later, with his medical training complete, Rivera returned to songwriting and recording with a new solo project: Dreams of Gray. Drawing from melodic death metal, doom, thrash, and classic heavy metal, the music is sonically punishing but emotionally intimate. What began as a new creative chapter evolved into a deeply personal act of mourning and resilience following the loss of Rivera’s parents and brother. “Their passing deeply influenced the lyrical direction of the project,” he says. “Themes of grief, loss, and ultimately resilience became central.”
To make Dreams of Gray the strongest work of his career, Rivera pushed himself as a musician. For the first time, he took formal guitar lessons, studying virtually with Italian guitarist Thalia Bellazecca. “I was confident as a rhythm player and vocalist, but I lacked formal training,” he explains. Bellazecca helped him build technical skills and expand his creative approach. Even after the lessons ended, the two have stayed in touch, with Bellazecca continuing to offer feedback on new material.
That growth is on full display in Dreams of Gray’s new EP, A Beginning, releasing September 5th, 2025. Featuring three tightly crafted tracks — “A Beginning,” “Beyond the Sky,” and “Across the Endless Sea” — the EP is a heavy yet heartfelt exploration of loss, memory, and the power of persistence. The first two singles are already out and gaining traction, and Rivera is assembling a live band in Chicago to take the music onstage.
Though Rivera’s work as a physician remains central to his life, music continues to be a vital source of strength and expression. “It has helped me get through some of the hardest moments,” he says, “and continues to be a space where I can channel both emotion and creativity.” With Dreams of Gray, Rivera is building something honest, powerful, and lasting — music that connects the body, mind, and soul.
