24 New Songs Out Today

Young N' LoudLevel Up1 month ago77 Views

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

HARD-FI – “THEY AIN’T YOUR FRIENDS”

Hard-Fi, the UK group that had mid-’00s hits like “Hard to Beat,” are back with their first album in 15 years — Sweating Someone Else’s Fever will be out June 19 via V2. Here’s the catchy first single.

ME REX – “PROTECTION RUNES”

ME REX have shared the second track off their new project, “Protection Runes.” In an Instagram post, they write, “The song came about after I saw a pair of runic symbols spraypainted on the side of each of the electrical panel boxes for the streets surrounding my house. I don’t know how long they had been there for before I noticed them, nobody else seems to pay them any attention. Algiz and Ansuz are signs of protection, I don’t know who they are meant to protect or against what. I don’t know the intention behind using the electrical boxes. I do know that germanic runes have at times been co-opted by far right groups and displayed with the intention to intimidate. These characters could signify a threat, a protective spell, a marker of territory or a cry for safety. Last summer I tore down a St George’s Cross that had just been ziptied to a lamppost in Churchill Square in Brighton. I dragged it through the road as I cycled away. Men in masks and hi-vis jackets shouted after me, but they had unfortunately hundreds more flags in their cardboard boxes. Either way, its important to fight far right nationalism wherever you see it.”

WEIRD NIGHTMARE (EX METZ) – “PAY NO MIND”

Alex Edkins notes that his new Weird Nightmare song, which is not a Beck cover, was partially inspired by an Atlantic City tourism shirt. “‘I’m so broke, I can’t even pay attention’ struck me as a particularly accurate comment on modern life. Obviously, the shirt is meant to be funny, but it felt quite dark to me. Due to the overwhelming onslaught of information and emotional baggage that comes with it, I think there is a tendency for people’s lives to become quite myopic. As a coping mechanism, we become more and more insular, ignoring the world around us.” Weird Nightmare’s new album Hoopla is out May 1 via Sub Pop and Dine Alone.

JESCA HOOP – “CARAVAN”

Jesca Hoop has given us another folky preview of her new album Long Wave Home with “Caravan.”

DUTCH INTERIOR – “GO FUCK YOURSELF”

There’s a lot I love about LA and there’s a lot I hate about it. This song addresses the latter,” say Los Angeles band Dutch interior of this new song from the band’s It’s Glass EP that’s out Friday.

GIA MARGARET – “GOOD FRIEND”

Gia Margaret’s new album Singing is out next month, and the latest single is “Good Friend.” “I wrote ‘Good Friend’ in late 2019, after my first bigger US tour,” she says. “I remember that it felt like glimpse of what my next album could be. It was fun and light in a way I hadn’t yet expressed with music. Little did I know, my next album(s) would be a result of cancelled tours and uncertain feelings about the future. I unearthed this song when I needed lightness in my creative process while recording ‘Singing.’ It reminds me of what my good friends bring to my life during the worst of it. (And that music can be a good friend too.) It was produced by Guy Sigsworth and myself and a product of all things nostalgic to me. A little nod to the late 90s and my everlasting appreciation for weaving Gregorian Chant into pop music.”

CALLA – “YOUR OWN WORST ENEMY”

’00s-era NYC band Calla are back and have been releasing new songs over the last year or so. Here’s the latest.

INDIGO DE SOUZA – “COME TO GOD”

“‘Come To God’ was born from an incredible turning point in my life—I lost my belongings to the flood, was blindsided by an abrupt ending to my most central relationships, and consequently moved across the country to LA,” Indigo De Souza says of her new single. “In the midst of my reality turning upside down, I came to recognize grief as a deeply important teacher. It’s always there, cyclically birthing me into new forms, showing me I am safe in my body.”

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS – “SLEEPS OLDER SISTER”

Here’s another quirky earworm from They Might Be Giants’ upcoming album The World Is to Dig.

SELLA – “SKIPPING OUT”

Brian Sella of The Front Bottoms is releasing his debut solo album as Sella, Well I Mean, next week, and he’s given us a second preview with the horn-laden “Skipping Out.”

THE BOBBY LEES – “NEW SELF”

Woodstock, NY’s The Bobby Lee’s have signed to Epitaph and will release their first album for the label, New Self, on June 12. “This song feels like a diary entry that I’m letting strangers read, it’s kinda weird to share – but fuck it,” says the band’s Sam Quartin. “We were listening to late 90’s Hip Hop and Nu Metal when we wrote it. We told Dave Sardy, who produced the track, that sound was our goal, that kinda feel.”

METRIC – “TIME IS A BOMB”

Metric have given us the second taste of their new album Romanticize the Dive. “Say what you want about the wellness boom, I think it’s a natural response to the unrelenting awareness we have of our mortality,” Emily Haines says. “The powerless feeling of wanting to hold on and make time stop while simultaneously doing everything you can to max out your fleeting vitality – this song expresses that inner tension. I love my life and I’m truly amazed that I made it to my happily ever after, but I don’t want to spend the time I have left obsessing over personal consequences, being boring and hiding from fun. I don’t expect to be jumping off speaker stacks or crowd surfing like I used to, but it’s still too soon to say never.”

HOLY FUCK – “ELEVATE”

Canadian dance rock vets Holy Fuck will release Event Beat at the end of March and “Elevate” will be the final preview before the whole album drops.

GILT – “SEATTLE DAY 2”

Florida “Nu Emocore” band Gilt have released their first new music in 4 years. About “Seattle Day 2,” rhythm guitarist and vocalist Tyler Fieldhouse says, “‘Seattle Day 2’ references the name of a bossfight with The Rat King in the popular The Last Of Us game series. It’s directly about succumbing to your worst self and is intended to feel inescapable. It comes with an accompanying classic core-era music video featuring influencer Kace Valentine in a campy horror subplot as a possessed Youtuber, linking to the album’s overall theme of media oversaturation and escapism.”

OCTO OCTA – “SURVIVAL GROOVE”

Producer and DJ Octo Octa (Maya Bouldry-Morrison) will release Sigils For Survival, their first album in seven years, on April 30. “As an autobiographical artist, I set out to write an album that would be a milestone for this past decade of joy and sorrow,” Maya says. “Sigils For Survival is my attempt to encapsulate the intentions and techniques that I used to move through life into a spell.”

TINARIWEN – “AMIDINIM EHAF SOLAN”

Tinariwen’s new single “Amidinim Ehaf Solan,” written by Touhami Ag Alhassane, “speaks of patience and unity amid political turmoil, a reminder that even a thirsty land can turn green again.” Its lyrics translate to, “My friend, I beg of you, go gently. We still have a country, albeit thirsty and in pain, but it will turn green again and grow new branches. There will be shade again, and beneath it we’ll take our rest. An old woman and a boy came by here to implore you to come together and unite, all of you, without exception.”

TRACEY NELSON – “DOLLY’S COAT (FT. MJ LENDERMAN)
