Widemouth share “Raincoat” off debut LP ‘No Gasoline’

Chicago band Widemouth are releasing their debut album, No Gasoline, next Friday (5/29) via Urban Scandal Records. It was co-produced by Jack Henry and Sam Genualdi, and the band say, “There’s a lot of anger and fear in these songs…a lot of heartbreak, grief, and stories from childhood; the patient exploration of old pain that’s a cornerstone of sobriety. But at the core of it all is friendship. Not just writing about friendship, although there is a lot of that. But more so that the album itself is an act of friendship, empathy, and community. We write these songs together, so all of the pain we’re expressing is shared.”

They’ve shared “Raincoat,” a plaintive ballad with a little country twang. “Mak [Carnahan] and I wrote this song together over Facetime and refused to hang up until we had a complete chorus,” the band’s Jamie Eder says.

“Most of the lyrics are about dissociation I was feeling after coming home from college,” Carnahan adds. Hear it, along with recent singles “Hotel Pool” and the title track, below.

Widemouth play a hometown Chicago release show on June 5 at Schubas with Free Range and Sleeper’s Bell.
