Wet Leg played SummerStage in Central Park and Brooklyn Paramount (pics, setlists, video)

Wet Leg brought their Moisturizer tour to NYC this week with two big shows — SummerStage in Central Park on Wednesday and Brooklyn Paramount on Thursday. They played the exact same setlist at both shows, hitting nearly every song they’ve released to date. 

I caught the SummerStage show, which was packed to the gills. I had actually only seen Wet Leg in tiny NYC venues (Mercury Lounge, Market Hotel) full of industry types, so it was great to see them play to a huge crowd of fans who danced and sang along to the bulk of the set. Rhian Teasdale has really come into her own as a frontperson, even more than at Market Hotel in the spring, spending most of the time working the stage, which looked like a cosmic nebula at times when the lights, smoke and bubble machines were all going at the same time on full blast.

The songs off Moisturizer really come alive on stage, especially the anthemic “u and me at home,” which has been turned into an audience participation number and would be a great set-closer if they didn’t have at least five others that also fit the bill. You might think it’d be “Chaise Longue,” but that was actually third from last with two great new ones closing out the show: the very sassy “mangetout” followed by the the massive riffage of “CPR.”

Opening on this tour, and at their shows back in the spring, are fellow UK indie rock band Mary in the Junkyard who just released a new single, the moody and atmospheric “midori,” today. You can listen to that below.
