Watch Tyler, The Creator and Timothée Chalamet in trailer for Josh Safdie’s ‘Marty Supreme’

Writer-director Josh Safdie‘s anticipated new film Marty Supreme is in theaters December 25 via A24. Set in the 1950s, the film stars Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, “a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.” That dream, to become a table tennis champion, is loosely based on real life ping pong great Marty Reisman.

Marty Supreme‘s cast also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, and, in his dramatic feature debut, Tyler Okonma aka rapper Tyler, The Creator. Tyler plays Marty’s friend and fellow hustler Wally. The first trailer for the film was released today and Tyler gets a fair amount of screen time here, going toe-to-toe and paddle-to-paddle with Chalamet in a few scenes. It’s high tension stuff as you might expect from the co-director of Uncut Gems and Good Time, and you can watch below.

The film premiered at the New York Film Festival last month and Tyler said at the post-screening Q&A, “Thank you to you, Josh. Please make the biggest noise for this man. I’m so grateful, beyond grateful. I play piano and put on cool clothes. I do not act at all. This man is so good that I trusted him and said, ‘Anything you need. I don’t want to read this script. I will show up and be there.’ Because I trust this man and the way he curated and handled every detail. And the team, working with y’all, it was so wonderful. I got emotional up there because you gave me a chance, so I thank you, I love you, and thank you. Please give it up.”

Marty Supreme is the first feature Josh Safdie has made without his brother, Benny, since his 2008 directorial debut The Pleasure of Being Robbed. Safdie once again tapped frequent collaborator Daniel Lopatin of Oneohtrix Point Never for the score.
