Watch Kelley Stoltz’s trippy animated video for drummer tribute “Watts Moon Starr”

Kelley Stoltz has shared a video for “Watts Moon Starr,” one of the highlights of his terrific new album If You Don’t Know Me, Buy Now! It’s groovy, trippy tribute to three of the most iconic rock drummers of all time. The animated video, featuring a surreal urban setting that takes off into outer space, was made by illustrator and album/poster artist Dave Van Patten, who won a Grammy in 2023 for his work on the Grateful Dead box set “In and Out of the Garden ‘81 ‘82 ‘83.”

“The inspiration came when I was walking around my neighborhood at night listening to the song in my headphones,” Dave tells us. “It just felt like a really good walking song. I’m kind of a fast walker and I found that my footsteps were perfectly in sync with the beat. The art is a bit of a self portrait. I like to walk around at night a lot, but I never really go inside anywhere. I kind of observe the sites of the world as I pass by. To me, the character felt a bit like an alien observer, so the abduction into space wasn’t as much of a kidnapping as it was a return home.”
