The Sachets of Relish took a satirical stab at the elitist xenophobes whose voices are getting increasingly insurgent online in me & my mansion, from the LP, eleventh. The track skewers a very modern fantasy: a utopia owed only to them, a country practically empty, where everything is privatised and luxuriant, nothing is base, and the streets are cleared of anyone who disrupts the delusion.
The Sachets of Relish refused the po-faced route, giving listeners the satisfaction of revelling in the humiliation of those viscerally put to shame in the whimsical folk narrative. It is quaint, eccentric and exactly the kind of release that can cut through the polarised static, allowing us to enjoy the absurdity of our modern times without leaving much room for mourning.
Their backstory, claiming origins as abandoned toys dumped in a Uranium-235-contaminated landfill site near leaky nuclear submarines at Faslane, only sharpens the whole radioactive nursery-rhyme atmosphere. With Helen Fisher Montgomery handling percussion on eleventh, the track rattles with enough ramshackle charm to make its mockery feel communal rather than cynical.
We can either laugh by embracing artists in the vein of The Sachets of Relish or cry; I know I’m choosing the former.
me & my mansion is now available to stream on all major platforms, including Bandcamp.
