New Details Emerge in Jubilant Sykes Killing— Stabbed 73 Times

An autopsy report reveals that opera singer Jubilant Sykes was stabbed over 73 times, allegedly by his son, in December 2025 at his Santa Monica home.

New details have emerged in the killing of opera singer Jubilant Sykes, who was found dead in his Santa Monica home in December. An autopsy report revealed that the 71-year-old baritone vocalist was stabbed over 73 times, with 68 of the injuries classified as “sharp force” wounds and five attributed to “blunt force.” His son, Micah, was taken into police custody and remains detained at Santa Monica Jail, where he faces murder charges.

During the attack, the singer’s wife, Cecelia, was reportedly in the shower and heard “the decedent yell out for her to call 911.” She placed a call regarding a “possible assault in progress.” Cecelia also stated that “her son, who has a documented history of mental illness, had stabbed and killed” Jubilant. Micah, who is one of the couple’s three sons, is barred from contacting his mother under a protective order.

“When [Cecelia] came out of the shower, she saw their adult son standing over [Sykes], stabbing him with an apparent artifactual sharp-edged weapon,” a Santa Monica Police Department report revealed.

Police officers discovered two weapons inside the Sykes’ home, including a “curved knife” with a blade approximately 9 inches long and 2 inches wide, and a 10-pound dumbbell “containing apparent blood stains.”

Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Rodriguez told the court that Micah was supposed to be “medicated,” but was “either under-medicated or not following his doctor’s recommendations.”

Since 1990, Jubilant Sykes enjoyed a flourishing career that spanned opera stages, concert halls, and musical theater productions. He also performed spirituals, worship, gospel, funk, and pop music. Sykes earned a Grammy nomination in 2010 for Best Classical Album and also served as artistic advisor for Orchestra Santa Monica.

“Jubilant’s remarkable artistry touched millions, and his voice was rightly described as ‘art at its highest expression,’” read a statement from his management team released after his passing. “Jubilant’s deep Christian faith perspective was the foundation of all that he was, and he will be greatly missed.”
