Miki Berenyi Trio played Lush classics & more at Brooklyn show with Raincoats’ Gina Birch (review, setlists)

For fans of dreampop and ’90s UK shoegaze, the Miki Berenyi Trio is of supergroup stature. Miki of course co-led Lush, and her partner, guitarist KJ McKillop, fronted underappreciated group Moose. Rounded out by nimble and energetic bassist Oliver Cherer, they sounded great at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday, which was the second night of their tour.

When MB3 toured last year, McKillop didn’t make it over as he doesn’t like flying, but what a difference he makes in the band. (He hadn’t been in the states since Moose toured with Cocteau Twins in 1994.) His ethereal fretwork was magical, and combined with Berenyi’s ecstatic strumming and Cherer’s slinky basslines made for pure bliss and a much better show than Webster Hall last year.

The band played the entirety of their new album Tripla (“Kinch” and “Manu” sounded particularly great), plus six Lush classics including “Undertow,” “Leaves Me Cold,” “For Love” and “Ladykillers.” If you’re a Lush fan, don’t miss them on this tour, as Miki says it is likely to be the last one MB3 do in North America given how expensive and difficult it is to get visas these days.

Visa issues also meant that Gina Birch‘s band, The Unreasonables, are not joining her on this tour as was originally announced. The Raincoats co-founder did just fine on her own, playing bass to laptop backing tracks, including songs from this year’s Trouble and 2023’s I Play My Bass Loud. (No Raincoats, though.) She ended her set by showing the very fun “Causing Trouble Again” video and taking a few questions from the audience.
