Rumors have been swirling that Jay-Z’s Roc Nation was preparing to announce none other than Jay-Z himself as the Super Bowl LXI halftime performer. Originally, fans thought he might drop the announcement during his final performance at SoFi Stadium for his anniversary tour over the weekend, but that did not come to pass. Instead, the announcement was made during the Dallas Cowboys-Philadelphia Eagles Monday Night Football game on ESPN.
The tour was a celebration of the 30th anniversary of Hov’s Reasonable Doubt album and the 25th anniversary of his The Blueprint album. Now that the tour has come to a close, however, it could shed some light on the special guests he may have planned for the big game. Special guests during the tour included John Legend, DJ Khaled, Too $hort, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg, as well as Jay-Z’s wife, Beyoncé, and the couple’s eldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.
Beyoncé will undoubtedly top the list for the upcoming Super Bowl. The megastar already headlined the event herself in 2013 and was a special guest during Super Bowl 50 in 2016. But even if she hadn’t, Beyoncé would still provide a significant draw for her husband, as her presence alone will certainly increase viewership.
Jay-Z’s Roc Nation has produced the Super Bowl Halftime Show since partnering with the NFL in 2019. However, this situation has led to backlash over the announcement regarding the rapper’s headlining slot, as it suggests he essentially appointed himself to the position. It’s been an undeniably major year for Jay-Z, but given that he hasn’t released new music in a while, critics online have bemoaned the absence of a more contemporary artist.
Since Roc Nation took the reins, headliners have included Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, Rihanna, Usher, Kendrick Lamar, and Bad Bunny, leading to record-breaking viewership numbers. Therefore, the NFL has every reason to trust the company’s intuition, even in the face of criticism.
