CMAT thrilled Webster Hall (pics, video, setlist)

“Does everyone here like country music?” CMAT, aka Irish artist Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, asked the crowd at her sold out Webster Hall show on Thursday night (9/18). “Does everyone agree that I make it?” Both of those questions were answered strongly in the affirmative, and in her broken-in cowboy boots in front of a light-up display of her face (and with a pedal-steel player in her backing band) her association with the genre was undeniable. But whether she was leading the entire floor and balcony in two-stepping along to “I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!,” belting it out Broadway-style on “Where Are Your Kids Tonight?,” or fully rocking out on “The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station,” she brings her own unique sensibility and a ton of charisma to whatever genre she’s taking on.

It’s been less than a month since the release of CMAT’s fantastic third album EURO COUNTRY, and the extremely psyched crowd definitely knew every word to every song she played from it, and to the handful of older ones she included, as well. She introduced “Take a Sexy Picture of Me,” an album highlight which inspired the trending-on-TikTok “woke macarena” over the summer, with a story of writing it while staying in an apartment in Bed-Stuy, and ahead of the title track she talked about her love for her home country despite a political incursion of the far right. Her extremely able band more than kept pace with her, joining her on line dancing across the stage, and keyboardist Colm Conlon did the TikTok sensation “woke macarena” during “Take a Sexy Picture.”

Having started the show standing on the bar in the back of the room singing “Janis Joplining,” CMAT also ended the night off the stage and in the middle of the crowd, which she ran into during “Stay for Something,” dancing along with a mass of ecstatic fans. It was a thrilling night that left me with the feeling that Webster Hall would likely be the smallest venue I’m ever able to see her in.

Opening Thursday night’s show were Tele Novella, the Texas band featuring Natalie Ribbons and Voxtrot’s Jason Chronis. See pictures from the whole night by Amanda M Hatfield below, along with video and the setlist from CMAT’s set.
