Social Distortion background

Social Distortion are a long-running American punk rock band from Fullerton, California, formed in the late 1970s, and known for blending punk energy with classic rock ’n’ roll. The band consists of Mike Ness (vocals, guitar), Jonny Wickersham (guitar), Brent Harding (bass), and David Hidalgo Jr.

After years of waiting, Social Distortion are finally back with new material — and the first two singles already feel like a strong return.

There’s something familiar in the sound, but at the same time it doesn’t feel stuck in the past. It feels lived in, sharper, and real. It’s Social Distortion. The two newly released singles, Born to Kill and Partners In Crime, are a reminder of what Social Distortion have been about for years: punk rock attitude, grit, and resilience.

When you first listen to Born to Kill, the intro alone is enough to pull you in. It’s raw and unfiltered rock ’n’ roll, carrying that immediate sense of drive and confidence. Mike Ness, who has shown resilience in his battle with tonsil cancer, sounds strong and fully in command from the opening line to the final note. Born to Kill is a perfect opener that leaves you wanting more from the album.

Where Born to Kill hits straight away, Partners In Crime builds differently. There’s a sense of urgency throughout the track, built around rebellion, voice, and the idea of standing your ground no matter the cost. Musically and lyrically, it stays true to Social Distortion’s core identity,  straightforward, guitar-driven rock ’n’ roll with a punk edge, however, there’s also a sense of reflection underneath the attitude.

Overall, both tracks point to a band that hasn’t lost its identity, even after years away and decades into their career. If these singles are anything to go by, this album has the potential to be something special — and well worth the wait.
