A long-awaited comeback that blends classic punk energy with a refreshed edge
A Long-Awaited Return
After 15 years of waiting, punk rock veterans Social Distortion have released Born to Kill. The highly anticipated album dropped on May 8th via Epitaph Records, marking the band’s eighth studio release. Ahead of the album, the band released the singles “Born to Kill,” “Partners in Crime,” and “The Way Things Were.”
Classic Energy Meets Refreshed Edge
Born to Kill feels like a mix of Social Distortion’s punk rock energy with a more refreshed edge. It’s especially striking considering Mike Ness has battled tonsil cancer in recent years, yet his voice sounds as powerful as ever. Whether he’s leaning into rockabilly, country, or straight-up punk, his vocal identity remains instantly recognizable.
A Surprising Take on “Wicked Game”
After such a long gap between records, one of the biggest surprises is their take on Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” Ness’s delivery on the high notes is especially impressive, and the song easily stands out as one of the album’s highlights.
“Crazy Dreamer” (Featuring Lucinda Williams)
Another key moment is “Crazy Dreamer,” where Ness teams up with Lucinda Williams, making it one of the most interesting moments on the album. The country influence fits seamlessly into the album’s broader sound. It also brings to mind Ness’s solo work, particularly Cheating at Solitaire and Under the Influences.
A Link to the Band’s Past
The album also revisits older tracks with “No Way Out” and “Don’t Keep Me Hangin On,” two songs originally written during the White Light, White Heat, White Trash era nearly 30 years ago. The songs fit naturally into the album despite being written decades ago.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Born to Kill proves Social Distortion hasn’t lost their edge after all these years. Rather than trying to reinvent themselves, the band leans into the sound and songwriting that made them stand out in the first place.
