Philadelphia-based artist Emily Moales began her Star Moles project in 2017, self-releasing music and working with close collaborator Kevin Basko, which led to the formation of his Historic New Jersey record studio and music group. Stereogum recently talked to her about that, and some of her previous material, but my introduction to Moales was with her new album Highway to Hell, which came out in February. It recalls both ’70s folk and minimalist bedroom pop at times, with clever lyricism, and it’s immediately very appealing. Stream it below.

Moales announced an NYC release show for Highway to Hell, happening at Night Club 101 on May 7. Tickets are on sale now.

She’ll also take part in a Philly show at Johnny Brenda’s on May 24, which will have membrs of Rubber Band Gun, Sam and Louise Sullivan, and Star Moles performing each other’s songs as one band.
