Phish revisited the ’90s at 92nd, 93rd, 94th, 95th & 96th shows at MSG (night 5 pics, setlist, video)

Phish wrapped up a five show run at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, which brings them to 96 shows at the arena. Appropriately, given the show count, this run focused on songs from the ’90s — 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996 in turn at each of the five nights, and working in covers and extended jams, all while dressed in clothes they once wore during those years. Phish.net called them “five monumental, historic and once-in-a-lifetime shows to make any phan of any caliber freak out,” highlighting the final night as “one of the greatest all-time shows Phish has ever put on, in my very attendance-driven bias.”

The year 1996 was a transitional period for Phish, as they settled into arenas around the country and continued to move from the once tightly woven compositions that defined their earlier works to a more traditional, heartfelt style of songwriting. Beginning with their fall tour and their Halloween cover of Talking Heads’ highly rhythmic Remain in Light LP, Phish also began to explore a more groove-driven approach to improvisation in late 1996, hinting at the cow-funk style they would fully embrace the following year.
