Union Pool fell for Greg Freeman… and vice versa! (pics, video)
Hours after announcing his third album, All Set the Bone, on Tuesday (7/21), Greg Freeman played the whole thing live at Union Pool. He’d announced the intimate show a week earlier, saying he’d be “playin some new songs with the band,” and “some” wound up meaning the whole set. No one at the sold out show seemed to mind; everyone around me was visibly digging the album, which he played ever song from, and which picks up where 2025’s Burnover (one of our favorite albums of the year) left off, bringing more crunchy indie rock with arrangements that are even bigger and heavier-hitting.
When I saw Greg back in September at Knockdown Center he had even more bandmembers onstage with him, but five people was plenty for Union Pool’s small stage — or too many, since owing to the limited space, Greg fell over his amp while jamming out a couple of times. He’ll have much more room to spread out when he returns to NYC on his fall tour, when he’ll play Webster Hall on November 20 with Robber Robber and Kleenex Girl Wonder.
Opening Tuesday night’s show was songwriter and guitarist great Wendy Eisenberg, whose new self-titled album is one of our favorites of the year so far. Many of the songs they were playing for the first time, and they were joined by their collaborator and partner Mari Rubio (aka more eaze) on violin to flesh out their intricately textured guitar.
