The Yummy Fur announce first album in 28 years, share “Unity Over Europe”

’90s-era Scottish indie band The Yummy Fur have announced their first album in 28 years. It’s titled Everybody Talks About the Weather and will be out September 25 via Upset the Rhythm. The core trio of frontman/guitarist John McKeown (who went on to form 1990s), guitarist Brian MacDougall and drummer Paul Thomson (who was in Franz Ferdinand from 2002-2022) produced the album themselves. The first single, “Unity Over Europe,” is a corker.

“‘Unity Over Europe’ is conceived as a two-act play with three main characters: Diana, Unity and Nancy, the Mitford Sisters,” says McKeown. “Act One finds them trapped in a flat two-dimensional Francis Bacon triptych spinning in space-time much like the excellent villains in Superman 2. In the second act Unity is placed in the nose cone of the V2 rocket and fired from Peenemünde into London, a punishment in homage to the final death parabola of Pynchon’s Rainbow.”

You don’t have to follow the real life history of the song’s lyrical themes to enjoy this one, which has a visceral punk kick. You can watch the video below.

The Yummy Fur, which also briefly counted a pre-Franz Ferdinand Alex Kapranos as a member, reformed in 2010 for a few shows, including a short US tour. They’ve got UK gigs lined up for the fall and those are listed below.
