The 2026 Coney Island Mermaid Parade in (NSFW) pics

Summer got off to a slightly early start on Saturday (6/20) with the 44th annual edition of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, which had mer-people of all ages, races, and genders, along with nautical creatures real and mythological, taking over Surf Ave and the boardwalk.

This year’s edition was threatened by an “urgent financial crisis” but thankfully wound up moving ahead as scheduled after raising money through GoFundMe (where they’re close to their goal) and receiving a $20k donation from Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. In a statement, Reynoso said, “The Mermaid Parade represents the most creative parts of Brooklyn. When I heard that the parade was in jeopardy, there was no question about stepping in to save it. Thousands of artists, creatives, and everyday Brooklynites have kicked off the summer by marching in the parade for over four decades and losing it would have been a devastating loss for our borough. I am so proud to be able to close the gap for Coney Island USA to ensure that the Mermaid Parade lives on for another year, and I hope that the parade marches on for many years to come.”

Jesse Malin and Rickie Lee Jones were this year’s King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, and they led the procession of marchers, who donned sequins, sea shells, body paint, jewels, glitter, tulle, pasties, elaborate headpieces, and often little else. This year also had an official orange and blue theme, as many attendees continued celebrating the Knicks’ historic championship win last week with their outfits.
