Rob Reiner and wife Michelle Singer Reiner were found dead at their home in Brentwood, CA home on Sunday afternoon. They were 78 and 68 respectively. According to TMZ, who were the first to confirmed the deaths with LAPD sources, the deaths are being investigated as a homicide.
Son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob was born in New York City in 1947 and caught his first big break playing Mike “Meathead” Stivic on groundbreaking ’70s sitcom All in the Family, but became one of the most successful filmmakers of the ’80s and ’90s.
His feature debut was enough to cement him in comedy history: 1984’s This is Spinal Tap, which helped create the “mockumentary” format and whose endless quotability and pop culture reach, especially in the music world, can still be felt today. (Long-gestating sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues was released this year.) His films include The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men.
In addition to his work in the entertainment industry, Reiner was very active politically and co-founded American Foundation for Equal Rights which helped overturn California’s Proposition 8 that banned same-sex marriage.
