Photographer (and BrooklynVegan contributor) Ebru Yildiz worked extensively with Mitski on photos to go with her 2023 album The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We (our 2023 album of the year), and now those photos (some of which you may have seen at a pop-up gallery last year, and many of which have never been published) will be published in a new book, King of All The Land: Mitski by Ebru Yildiz. It has a foreword by Mitski, an afterword by Mitchell King, and features 109 duotone images over 144 pages, plus five six-page gatefolds and one eight-page gatefold. It’s being published by Norway’s Skeleton Key Press and What Remains (an imprint started by Ebru and Mitchell), and it’s available for pre-order now. Take a look inside below.

“Ultimately, King of All the Land embodies authenticity, standing as a testament to collaboration and the pursuit of artistic truth,” Russell Joslin of Skeleton Key Press says. “Each black-and-white image radiates freedom and rebellion, revealing the emotional depth of Mitski while prioritizing storytelling over superficial ideals. This collection invites viewers to reflect on the significance of artistic collaboration and genuine expression, challenging traditional representations of women in photography. Through Yıldız’s lens, viewers connect with Mitski’s striking openness and the transformative power of art, encouraging them to seek authenticity and connection in a world that often confines.”

“This body of work and this book have been my pride and joy,” Ebru says. “It has been in the works for the past 3 years and I am so happy to finally release it into the world… It is one of those projects that reminds me why I do what I do and how much I love what I do… I feel incredibly grateful for Mitski and her team’s trust in me and how they stood by me at every step in the making of this book.”

Meanwhile, a concert film of Mitski’s live show for The Land is Inhospitable and so Are We arrives in theaters later this month.
