Dan Deacon has made the transition from whimsical dance music artist to in-demand film-and-TV composer, having recently scored HBO’s Task, not to mention Hustle, Ascension, Venom: The Last Dance, and more. His latest score is for new Netflix comedy Little Brother that stars John Cena, Michelle Monaghan, and Dan’s longtime friend Eric André.
As Dan notes, in addition to co-starring in the movie, Eric André — who attended Berklee College of Music — also plays on Deacon’s score. “Blending a live orchestra of strings, woodwinds, and brass with percussion and electronics created a sonic palette that becomes a through-line for the film. The highlight of the recording sessions was having Eric André play upright bass on the score. Watching him channel his signature energy into a classical instrument was pure joy. He brought raw energy. Sampling his voice for the loops in the main theme opened up the piece, letting me explore it more, like one of my album tracks.”
You can listen to “Brother,” featuring Eric André, below.
The Little Brother soundtrack and the Netflix movie are out June 26. Here’s the synopsis: “Rudd (John Cena) has the perfect life – great job, loving family, and a thriving career as a real estate agent… until his little brother, Marcus (Eric Andre), crashes back into his world as a full-blown agent of chaos, stress-testing every part of Rudd’s carefully controlled existence.” You can watch the trailer below.
Dan Deacon is still making whimsical electronic dance music and he’s got a few shows lined up this summer and fall including NYC’s Pioneer Works on July 31 with Macula Dog and MSHR. All dates are listed below.
