Nine Inch Noize, aka Nine Inch Nails and Boys Noize, made their Coachella debut on Saturday at the festival’s Sahara Tent. This collaboration has been one of the many highlights of Nine Inch Nails’ Peel it Back Tour but this was their first full-length set; they played 11 songs over 45-minutes, and it was also livestreamed.

Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Boys Noize played in the same compact, boxy formation as at the Peel it Back Tour configuration, but their bank of synths were surrounded by a sloping set, and a dozen or so faceless dancers eerily made their way around them throughout the show. It was a desert epic — Dune-esque — with a trio core.

Except when they were four. Mariqueen Maandig of Trent’s How to Destroy Angels project (and his wife) joined on half of the songs (including HTDA’s “Parasite”), appearing at the start and end of the set. Eight of the 11 songs had been played on the Peel It Back Tour during the Nine Inch Noize portion of the show, but three were new to Coachella: The Downward Spiral’s “Heresy,” which featured Maandig, “Copy of A” (which was a full-band highlight of the Peel it Back tour), and a cover of Soft Cell’s “Memorabilia.”

Nine Inch Noize play Coachella again on Saturday, April 18 which is one day after they release their album.
