Over the weekend, Brazilian soccer star Jorginho Frello accused singer Chappell Roan of making his stepdaughter (actor Jude Law’s biological daughter) cry after an incident with her security at a São Paulo hotel. The mayor of Rio de Janeiro even got involved, prompting Roan to quickly relay her version of events on social media.
Now, the mother of 11-year-old Ada—British singer Catherine Harding, who is Frello’s wife and Law’s former partner—has spoken out about the incident, as well as Roan’s claims. Harding was at the hotel with her daughter when the incident occurred.
According to Harding, the two were at the hotel restaurant having breakfast, and her daughter went to see if it was Roan that she spotted, also having breakfast at the hotel. Harding said the moment was so quick that her daughter wasn’t even sure it really was the “Pink Pony Club” singer, who has been in town to headline Lollapalooza Brazil.
Roan says the security guard in question was not part of her personal team, but Harding asserts that he was not a member of hotel security either.
“I don’t know if it was her personal security guard, but he was with her,” said Harding. “That is all that I know.”
“Did she send him to do it? Again, I don’t know,” Harding added. “I would like to hope not, but at the same time, I think that you have a responsibility when you are a celebrity to make sure, I guess, that the people that work with you and act on your behalf are acting on your behalf.
Harding noted that her daughter was a big fan of Chappell Roan before the incident and had asked for tickets to her concert for her birthday. But Harding said they did not attend.
It’s not the first time Roan has drawn criticism for the way she sets boundaries with fans. In 2024, she posted a rant on social media calling out “predatory behavior disguised as ‘superfan’ behavior,” and said an incident made her feel “the most unsafe I have ever felt in my life.”
