A social media post by Rep. Nancy Mace confirms that Shawn Carter, better known as Jay-Z, is among those the government is eyeing in connection with the ever-expanding Jeffrey Epstein files investigation.
On March 3, Rep. Mace posted a statement on the former Twitter asserting that recently reviewed material in connection with the federal Epstein investigation referenced Carter by name. Her post came in response to one made by Rep. James Comer, who called on Bill Gates, Epstein’s former assistant Lesley Groff, and a handful of other figures for transcribed interviews.
It’s important to note that Carter has not been charged with any crimes related to Epstein, and no publicly filed indictment, plea agreement, or other filing in the Southern District of New York docket names him as a defendant or co-conspirator. Reviews of the primary criminal case file, including those filed before Epstein’s death, show no reference to Carter with regard to any charges.
Nevertheless, the name-drop is a significant one, and a subpoena to call Carter in for questioning could still be issued. Carter has not yet publicly addressed Mace’s statement, and his Roc Nation has not responded to media requests for comment.
Both politicians’ posts come amid increasing bipartisan pressure to declassify and release the documents connected to Epstein in a more timely fashion. Epstein was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019 and died in custody a month later.
The investigation has resulted in thousands of pages of sealed and unsealed filings, many in civil litigation arising from sex trafficking and abuse allegations.
