Spotify Fires Back Against Apple with Playlist-Transferring

Spotify takes aim at Apple Music with its own playlist-transferring tool, thanks to integration with TuneMyMusic.

On Thursday, Spotify announced integration with TuneMyMusic, a tool that can transfer playlists from other streaming services into users’ Spotify libraries. The new feature is currently rolling out to all Spotify users and can be found in the “Your Library” section on the Spotify mobile app.

To use TuneMyMusic, scroll to the bottom of the page and tap on the option to “Import your music.” From there, just follow the prompts to connect with the service. Users can choose the platform from which they’d like to transfer their playlists.

Notably, the process does not delete your playlists from the original service; it merely copies them over to Spotify. TuneMyMusic says it supports transferring from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Deezer, Pandora, SoundCloud, Tidal, YouTube Music, and more.

It’s also worth noting that because this isn’t a homegrown solution, TuneMyMusic enables users to transfer their playlists out of Spotify too.

The move comes as Spotify’s biggest competitor, Apple Music, already offers a way for users (at least those on iOS) to transfer their saved music and playlists from other services to their Apple Music library. A similar option exists within the Android version of the app, though it reportedly works a bit differently than the native iOS version.

Other Spotify competitors such as YouTube Music offer the ability for Premium subscribers to import their playlists from other services.

Spotify also announced on Thursday the acquisition of WhoSampled, the community-run database that tracks sampled music. For Spotify, this lends to its new song credit features such as SongDNA, which is also powered by the integration with TuneMyMusic.

WhoSampled says its stand-alone platform and brand will remain, and it expects to be able to offer some improvements for users as it transitions into Spotify’s larger business. The company first partnered with Spotify in 2016 to allow users to access their Spotify playlists and saved tracks in the WhoSampled app—but the acquisition takes things even further. Spotify confirmed that the acquisition includes both the WhoSampled team, which consists of about 10 employees, and its database.
