A federal judge has rejected a push from Muni Long’s ex-managers to subpoena the artist’s medical records, which are “protected by the patient-doctor/psychotherapist privilege.”

Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn made that development official with a recent order handed down amid an ugly defamation sub-dispute. The overarching legal battle, for its part, resembles multiple other courtroom confrontations between clients and managers who made the mistake of deciding against putting their deals in writing.

In any event, the showdown kicked off back in October 2025, when management firm Ebony Son Entertainment sued Muni Long (real name Priscilla Renea Hamilton) for breach of oral contract.

Led by Chaka Zulu and Jeff Dixon, Atlanta-headquartered Ebony Son accused the defendant artist of failing to pay the 20% gross revenue commission to which it was allegedly entitled under their purported oral agreement.

The way they told (and tell) the story, the “serial grifter” Long sought out their services, paid the 20% fee at hand for some time, and then “brazenly decided to renounce and unilaterally withdraw from” the arrangement in or around October 2024.

Unsurprisingly, the writing was on the wall prior to this allegedly abrupt split; Long is said to have called out the terms “by expressing a preference to pay a percentage of net proceeds, instead of 20% of gross revenue.”

Evidently, the resulting July 2024 meeting didn’t bring about an amicable resolution. Post-split, however, the opportunities are said to have continued pouring in for the “Richest” artist.

The professional allegedly owes commission payments totaling over $450,000 (plus north of $150,000 in reimbursements to boot), including from an ASCAP deal “valued at $1 million,” an October 2024 SiriusXM performance for which Long was paid $70,000, and more.

Back to the initially mentioned medical records, the straightforward-enough contract dispute took a turn after Long alleged “a claim for intentional infliction of emotional distress, but subsequently withdrew that claim to avoid disclosing her medical records,” Judge Netburn reiterated.

Beneath the alleged emotional distress and the desire to avoid providing the records, the Ebony Son principals were accused of having attempted to involuntarily commit Long to a mental health facility while she was suffering from a lupus flare-up.

From there, Ebony Son added a defamation claim – and moved to subpoena the hospital records. Now, though, the motion to quash has been granted in part.

In Judge Netburn’s words, the plaintiffs were seeking “essentially all documents related to Hamilton’s treatment at the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Behavioral Health Center” in March 2024.

Per the court, Long “would have waived her privilege” had she proceeded with the emotional distress counterclaim, but as she “never released her records before she withdrew the counterclaim…her privilege was reinstated.”

“Ebony Son, moreover, cannot waive Hamilton’s privileges through its defamation claim because only a patient can waive her privilege by putting her mental state at issue,” the judge continued.

Nevertheless, the filing party will be able to “seek non-medical information from Hamilton regarding the alleged defamatory statement and the circumstances surrounding her admission to the Clinic, to the extent it would not pierce her privilege.”

Put differently, Ebony Son may inquire “about the circumstances of her admission to the Clinic but may not seek discovery of her medical records and treatment,” the court concluded.

With that, the increasingly involved case is proceeding, and we’ll continue tracking the high-stakes clash from here.
