Another Seismic Shakeup Surfaces at Warner Music Group

Warner Music Group (WMG) has announced a big reorganization of its recorded music leadership this morning, shifting executives across its international divisions, independent distribution arm, and frontline labels.

Just moments after triggering a serious change on the publishing end, Warner Music Group don Robert Kyncl is making vast-and-sweeping changes on the recording end.  According to details disseminated by WMG and Kyncl to Digital Music News this morning, the executive changes are intended to support the company’s operational goals regarding market share, music valuation, and efficiency.

All of which are big corporate reshuffling triggers words… so consider yourself appropriately warned.

Chief among the big changes: Val Blavatnik is now joining the executive team as the new Managing Director of Warner Music North America, UK, & Corporate Development, taking charge of cross-market business operations and enterprise investment strategy.

And expanding his global footprint, Alejandro Duque is now stepping into the role of President of Warner Music International, adding the APAC and EMEA regions to his previous oversight of Warner Music Latin America.

Rounding out the leadership changes, Aaron Bay-Schuck now takes the helm as the sole Chairman and CEO of Warner Records Group, transitioning from the co-chairman position he has held since 2018.

In the US, leadership at Atlantic Music Group (AMG) is also expanding to oversee WMG’s independent distribution arm, the Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA).

Enter Elliot Grainge, currently Chairman and CEO of AMG, who now assumes the additional role of Chairman of ADA. Zach Friedman adds Vice Chairman of ADA to his current role as AMG’s COO. Grainge and Friedman previously founded the independent label 10K Projects before it was integrated into WMG. The company stated ADA will continue to operate as a standalone business.

In the European market, Guillermo Gonzalez has been promoted to President, Warner Music EMEA.

Gonzalez previously led Warner Music Iberia, where he integrated the division’s live music and management businesses. Andrés Rothschild will succeed him as President of Warner Music Iberia.

Additionally, WMG announced that Simon Robson, who has shaped WMG’s international operations for nearly 30 years, will step down in December to pursue new opportunities.

Commenting on the big changes, Kyncl noted that the appointments will “enhance our best-in-class leadership team with diverse skill sets to execute on the next chapter of WMG’s growth.”
