Hear Fiona Apple’s theme song for new Apple TV series ‘Lucky’

Jonathan Tropper’s new limited series Lucky, based on Marissa Stapley’s 2021 novel and starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Luciana “Lucky” Armstrong, premieres today on Apple TV, including a theme song from Fiona Apple. Taylor-Joy confirmed Apple’s involvement in an interview with Movieplayer.it, telling them, “I wanted the music to be female centric and with a rock edge. And what I’m absolutely thrilled about is that the legend, Fiona Apple, does our title sequences. When that became a possibility, I was just screaming, my teenage self freaked out. And I think her voice is a perfect description of this series. There’s a timbre, a rawness and a graveness that perfectly exemplifies the show.”

As Stereogum points out, Amy Aileen Wood, Apple’s drummer, is married to one of the showrunners, Cassie Pappas. Wood and Apple co-produced the song together, and it’s fantastic; hear it below.

This is Apple’s first new music since last year’s “Pretrial (Let Her Go Home),” which was written in support of mothers affected by the broken cash-bail system (she also co-wrote a song on Cara Delevingne’s new album). We also heard from her recently when she shared a video on social media via her roommate and friend Zelda Hallman, where she said she’s “struggling” with writing amongst the “fucking endless barrage of horrors” in the world. Hallman’s caption for the video reads:

She’s been trying to find a truthful way to speak to the enormity of what’s happening in the world, from the horror in Gaza and Sudan, to the cruelty being aimed at trans kids, to the assault on women’s bodily autonomy, to the abuse and terror being inflicted on immigrants and their families, to the erosion of voting rights and civil liberties, to the disappearance of Indigenous and Black children, so often met with silence, and to so much more suffering and injustice than can be named or addressed in a single statement.

This is where she is.
