St. Vincent is in the midst of her orchestral tour, and on Thursday night (7/2) she brought the affair to a sold-out crowd at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall. Annie Clark and her live band, which includes Rachel Eckroth (piano), Robert Ellis (guitar), Allee Futterer (bass) and John Hadfield (drums), have performed alongside different local orchestras throughout the run, and in NYC they joined the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Jules Buckley. Together they brought the new orchestral arrangements from throughout Clark’s discography (which have been released as Live in London! (BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall)) to life.
For the first few songs, Clark was without her usual guitar, standing near the front of the stage for “We Put a Pearl in the Ground”, “Reckless” and others. That part of the show felt otherworldly and orchestra-focused, as the interstices between songs were lifted by instrumentation. As the “Smoking Section” suite came to an end (“it’s not the end”, Clark sang), the horns offered another climax. “Nowhere Inn” featured a powerful interlude, and after Clark sang “Now I live at the Nowhere Inn” for the first time, the thunderous percussion fueled another swell of horns before the subdued strings returned.
There was a notable shift towards the rock side of the musical spectrum when Clark announced “Alright, let’s break it up”, before performing “Digital Witness” and “Los Ageless”.
After introducing her band and the orchestra, St. Vincent said it was sometimes awkward to introduce the next song in other cities but that she “finally [got] to sing the song” for its namesake city. “New York”, the night’s showstopper, saw Clark out among the crowd, greeting some fans with a kiss on the head or an embrace while the rest of the hall stood clapping along. The finale saw Clark perform a wistful “Slow Disco,” wrapping up a stunning evening.
