Bonnie Tyler is no longer in a coma, but remains “very unwell” in intensive care in Portugal following emergency surgery back in May.

“Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer Bonnie Tyler is still recovering after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery last month that saw her placed in an induced coma. She is no longer in a coma, but remains “very unwell” and in intensive care in a hospital in Portugal, her family confirmed. Doctors “remain confident” that she will recover, but her upcoming tour dates will be cancelled or postponed until next year.

“Although her condition is improving, it is a slow process,” her family said. “Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery, but it is going to take time.”

Tyler was originally scheduled to tour this summer and fall, but the summer dates have now been nixed, while some of the autumn dates still intend to go ahead if the singer’s health permits.

“This will affect every current show until the end of August. At present, we are still hopeful that our shows in the autumn will go ahead,” the statement read.

The family’s statement also apologized for the disruption to Tyler’s summer dates, but “trust that you will understand and bear with us in these difficult circumstances.”

A spokesperson thanked fans for their “huge outpouring of love and support” around the world, noting that Tyler was aware of it and grateful. Her team asked for privacy and promised that further updates would follow once significant developments occurred.

Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins in Wales, was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell and released her first single in 1977. Five years later, she released “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which spent four weeks at the top of the charts in the US and two weeks in the UK. She also won a Grammy for the song, and it remains her most famous hit.

She represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 and received an MBE honor for her services to music in 2023.
