Watch Britpop vets Gene play their first show in 21 years (setlist, video)

What a year we’re having for classic ’90s Britpop (and adjacent genres). Oasis are back. Pulp are back. The Beta Band are back. Super Furry Animals are back. And last night, Gene played their first show in 21 years.

Even though the first show was at Leeds’ Brudenell Social Club, it still seemed like a clever move to open with “London Can You Wait?” from their debut album, Olympian, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It’s the original lineup of the band — frontman Martin Rossiter, guitarist Steve Mason, bassist Kevin Miles and drummer Matt James — and their set stuck mainly to Olympian, second album Drawn to the Deep End and some of their beloved b-sides like “Sick Sober and Sorry.” Gene used to get compared to The Smiths a lot, mainly due to Rossiter’s voice, but one way the two groups were very much alike was that many of their best songs were not on the albums.

The Brudenell setlist included “Sick Sober and Sorry,” as well as “For the Dead,” “I Can’t Help Myself,” “Be My Light, Be My Guide,” “Sleep Well Tonight,” “A Car That Sped,” “We Could Be Kings,” “Fighting Fit,” and more. The night ended, appropriately, with “Who Said This Was the End,” a b-side to their 2001 single, “Is It Over?” Gene are good at setlists.

Gene play Sheffield on Thursday and London on Saturday, both sold out, and have 2026 dates in Nottingham, Glasgow, Bristol, Dublin and Manchester. Check out their tour poster below.

Olympian came in at #11 on our list the the Greatest Britpop Albums of 1995.
