The Multi-instrumentalist Redefining Indie Rock from His Bedroom Studio: Meet Trey Alexander

In a music landscape often divided by strict genre lines, Trey Alexander is the kind of artist who quietly — and confidently — ignores them. Born in Laguna Beach and now based in Miami, the solo artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist has been steadily carving his own lane, blending indie rock, psychedelia, ambient textures, jazz influences, and a wide spectrum of sonic experimentation into a sound that feels both nostalgic and distinctly his.

Trey’s relationship with music began way before he ever picked up an instrument. As a toddler, he was a regular at his uncle’s gigs — dancing at age two to live bands before he fully understood what performance even meant. Growing up in a household filled with Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Bauhaus, The Police, and The Eagles, he developed what he now affectionately calls an “old-soul mentality,” shaped by classic rock’s rawness, grit, and emotional weight.

That early exposure sparked an obsession with musicianship. Before hitting middle school, Trey had already taught himself — entirely by ear — some of rock’s most iconic solos on the saxophone, including Jimmy Page’s “Stairway to Heaven” and the twin-guitar solo from “Hotel California.” But everything shifted when he discovered the guitar. From age nine onward, his world became a rotation of instruments: bass, drums, piano, ukulele, tuba, and, of course, the guitar that now defines so much of his sound.

What makes Trey unique is not just the breadth of what he plays, but the autonomy with which he creates. He is fully self-produced and self-managed, building his sound from the ground up — literally. What started as a GarageBand setup in his basement has grown into a full-fledged home studio, where he records, mixes, and shapes every track himself. Now using Logic Pro X, he’s developed a production style that matches his songwriting: atmospheric, dynamic, and rich with detail.

Since releasing his debut EP I’m the Moon in 2019, Trey has been steadily leveling up with each new release, revealing just how expansive his artistic range truly is. What’s most striking about his evolution is the way every track feels like a new chapter rather than a repeat of the last. One moment he’s leaning into gritty, riff-driven rock; the next he’s crafting dreamy, chorus-washed soundscapes that feel almost cinematic. It’s this sense of exploration — this willingness to move wherever the music takes him — that makes following his journey so engaging.

Listeners can trace his growth through the textures he experiments with: the haunting arpeggios of “Spend My Life,” the raw urgency pulsing through “Fall, Fire, Fall,” the blues-tinged ease of “Groove Interlude,” or the tight, punchy energy of “Rhyme and Reason.” Trey approaches each track like a world of its own — not trying to replicate a formula, but chasing whatever sound best captures the moment he’s in.

Much of that evolution comes from the space where he creates. Trey’s home studio isn’t just a workspace; it’s an extension of his identity as a self-taught producer. What began with GarageBand and a guitar has become a full creative laboratory, and you can hear the freedom in the music — every layer, every texture, every mix shaped entirely by his own hand. It’s rare in today’s indie scene to find an artist this fully autonomous, and it shows.

And now, with his newest single “When I Ran Away” — out on all streaming platforms — Trey leans into one of his most emotionally resonant releases yet. The track feels like a turning point: introspective, atmospheric, and grounded in the guitar-forward storytelling that has become his signature. If it’s any indication of what his upcoming full-length album will sound like, fans are in for something special.

Trey Alexander is entering a new creative era — one defined not by genre, but by vision. His sound keeps expanding, his production keeps sharpening, and his voice as an artist is becoming unmistakably his own.
