Spotify has now released another so-called AI enhancement to its playlist ecosystem, this time with the goal of making transitions between tracks even smoother. The move follows a string of AI-powered playlist upgrades across the stream-o-sphere.

After Spotify released the ability to create seamless transitions between playlist tracks for Premium subscribers last year, the streamer is doubling down with the launch of Smart Reorder. This feature gives Premium users an easier way to rearrange playlists based on track beats per minute (BPM) and key.

The functionality can rearrange playlists with a single tap. Paying subscribers can tap Mix on one of their playlists, followed by the Edit button. From there, scroll down to find the Smart Reorder option; tapping it will automatically rearrange songs according to their keys and BPM without further input from the user. Then, just hit Save to set those changes.

According to Spotify, users have streamed over 220 hours of mixed playlists since the company introduced custom transitions last year. Some of the most popular songs to transition into one another include The Weeknd’s “Wake Me Up” into “After Hours,” Flo Rida’s “Low” into Rihanna’s “S&M,” Sean Paul’s “No Lie” into Coldplay’s “Adventure of a Lifetime,” and Kendrick Lamar’s “euphoria” into Skepta and Playboi Carti’s “TOXIC.”

Spotify also released a Mixed By hub for some new playlists to provide inspiration for users checking out the reordering feature. These include artists like John Summit, Becky G, Normani, Beele, Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn of Linkin Park, Odeal, Groovy Room, and monte booker.

The mixed playlist feature already included the ability to check the BPM and key for each song when you tap Mix—but this update does all that automatically, enabling you to reorder the playlist with a single tap instead of taking the time to manually curate the transitions.

Mixed playlists can also be shared with friends, while the transition editor (and the new Reorder function) is available for collaboration on playlists you build with your friends. Users can also create their own cover art for their mixed playlists using Spotify’s built-in editor, which debuted in 2024.
