Ready for even more AI audio? OpenAI is reportedly developing a generative music tool to compete with the likes of Suno and Udio.

Rumblings of the AI music buildout surfaced in a brief report from The Information, which cited anonymous sources. At the time of this writing, OpenAI itself hadn’t commented publicly on the subject.

But an audio expansion hardly seems impossible for the entity, which is reportedly valued at $500 billion. In the first place, it’s not a secret that OpenAI is aggressively building out – including on the video side with Sora 2.

Also widely known are the hard numbers associated with Udio and Suno, the latter of which, far-reaching infringement litigation or not, is reportedly in talks to raise capital at a whopping $2 billion valuation.

(To state the obvious, it’d be far easier to develop an AI music platform without staring down massive copyright complaints; OpenAI earlier in October tested the music-partnership waters with a ChatGPT-Spotify integration deal.)

At the intersection of the video efforts and machine-made music’s reported revenue potential, OpenAI is reportedly working with Juilliard School students “to annotate music scores” for training purposes.

According once again to The Information, any resulting music tool might support text and audio prompts – though the rumored offering’s concrete details, including a release timetable and precise features, remain to be seen.

Shifting from hypotheticals to facts, it probably won’t come as a surprise that OpenAI has already dabbled in music.

“Yes — OpenAI has already developed generative-music models and is reportedly working on a new one,” ChatGPT went ahead and explained to DMN when asked about the possible music tool.

The existing models refer to 2019’s MuseNet (which “‘generate[d] 4-minute musical compositions with 10 different instruments’”) and 2020’s Jukebox (“a neural net that generates music, including rudimentary singing”), the chatbot reiterated.

Leaving the same chatbot in the driver’s seat for a moment, ChatGPT further confirmed that its developer had in July posted a listing for a “Voice AI Data & Design” position offering a nearly $500,000 annual salary and equity.

The hired San Francisco-based employee would, among other things, “[p]rototype generative audio capabilities (music, FX, ambient) that enhance conversational and accessibility experiences,” according to the text.

Not stopping there, ChatGPT had no problem providing (despite the absence of publicly disclosed roles specifically mentioning voice AI data and design) a list of professionals who joined OpenAI in August 2025 and who seemingly possess the skills needed to develop a generative music tool.
