Netflix confirms a sequel to its enormously successful animated flick KPop Demon Hunters, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans back as directors.

After the worldwide success of its animated film KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix has confirmed a sequel is on the way. Sony Pictures will produce the flick, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning as directors. The project marks the first to come from the exclusive multi-year animation writing and directing deal. It also follows the first film’s success as Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time.

“With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences; they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria. “We’re incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with them, and together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans all over the world.”

“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” said Kang. “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”

“These characters are like family to us; their world has become our second home,” added Appelhans. “We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve—and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”

The first Kpop Demon Hunters has racked up more than 500 million views on Netflix since it debuted in June 2025, and its soundtrack continues to make history, having been streamed over 11 billion times. The film’s titular K-pop group, the fictional HUNTR/X, has become the first K-pop girl group to reach #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, while the track “Golden” became the first K-pop song in history to win a Grammy Award. Kpop Demon Hunters is also nominated for two Oscars: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Golden”).
