Mariachi El Bronx, the mariachi alter ego of LA punks The Bronx, are back with their first new album in 12 years. Mariachi El Bronx IV is due out on February 13 via ATO. According to the press release, it “documents the stories of gamblers, former playboys, warriors, lovers – characters that became vessels for the specific pressures of being alive right now.” “Punk rock and mariachi music are very similar in soul,” songwriter and lead vocalist Matt Caughthran says. “It’s working class music. It’s real music.” He adds, “This band has always been about learning and exchanging culture through music and art. That’s what it’s all about! Everything we do comes from the heart and soul.”
We have an exclusive “Golden Ripple” vinyl variant of Mariachi El Bronx IV, limited to 100 copies and available for pre-order now in the BV shop.
The first single is “Forgive or Forget,” which features Ray Suen on violin. Caughthran says it’s about someone “who’s completely disheveled and a little washed out, looking back on their life in a way that’s kind of hazy. There’s a little bit of hope there, but it’s pretty dark.” Hear it below.
The band also announced some shows happening from December through February in Southern California and Mexico. “These four shows represent a sacred right of passage for every Southern Californian,” they say. “And Tijuana is raw, beautiful, dangerous, and inspiring. I couldn’t think of a more perfect place to celebrate the new album.” Tickets, which are $4 (in celebration of the new album), are on sale now.
