AMC Theatres has announced its highest May attendance since pre-COVID levels, signaling a major return to traditional film attendance. As a result, the largest theatrical exhibitor in the world has postponed a series of concert screenings featuring pop stars including Bebe Rexha, Maren Morris, and Paris Hilton to focus on the summer box office surge.
Previously, AMC had announced a collaboration with Arena One to simulcast a series of concerts from a studio with interactive capabilities that would allow artists to interact with fans in hundreds of theaters at a time. Called AMC Girls Night Live, those shows will be rescheduled for later this year. Advance tickets for the summer dates will be automatically refunded.
It’s been a big year for film, and lots of heavy-hitters lit up the big screen this spring and early summer, including The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the new Star Wars film, Project Hail Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, A24’s Backrooms, and Lionsgate’s record-breaking Michael Jackson biopic, Michael. Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 5 comes out later this month, which is expected to challenge the opening of The Incredibles 2 for the highest domestic opening for an animated film.
“These immensely satisfying results reflect the strength of a diverse film slate, one that was driven both by established blockbusters with their well-known characters along with entirely new IP,” Aron continued. “This current measure of success, combined with the many compelling movies coming to our screens in the weeks and months ahead, gives us great confidence as we look to the rest of 2026.”
