The summer box office is already heating up, and Michael Jackson continues to sizzle on the big screen. The Antoine Fuqua-directed Michael has raked in $97.2 million domestically and $217.4 million worldwide in its opening week, and now stands at $346.6 million domestically and over $508 million abroad—making for over $854.6 million globally as of Thursday.
But this weekend, the film is poised to surpass the two top-grossing Lionsgate titles of all time: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($865 million worldwide) from 2013 and Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 ($868.5 million worldwide) from 2012. That’s impressive for a biopic, as well as for a film that isn’t a sequel to a successful franchise.
It’s also expected to tip the film over the edge into surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody ($911 million worldwide) as the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time. The MJ movie has already outpaced the lifetime of the Queen biopic in several markets, including the United States, the UK ($65 million), France ($51 million), Germany ($32 million), Mexico ($31 million), Brazil ($30 million), Australia ($29 million), Spain ($25 million), Italy ($28 million), and the Netherlands ($13 million).
On its 16th day of release, Michael had already passed Bohemian Rhapsody as the highest-grossing musical biopic in the U.S. It’s had an impressive run each week since its release, with its lowest dip in attendance coming in its second week with 44%.
