13 New Songs Out Today

adminLevel Up4 hours ago6 Views

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

ARMAND HAMMER & THE ALCHEMIST – “CALYPSO GENE” (ft. SILKA & CLEO REED)

As we get closer to the anticipated new Armand Hammer & The Alchemist album, today we get our second taste.

TYCHO & PAUL BANKS – “BOUNDARY RIDER”

“Interpol has long been one of my biggest influences so I jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with Paul on a song,” says Tycho’s Scott Hansen of this collaborative single with Paul Banks. “Boundary Rider started life as an atmospheric instrumental song titled ‘Forge’ that I had been working on here and there for a couple of years. When I met Paul and started thinking about what songs might connect with his voice, Forge immediately came to mind. I had been reading about the lives of Boundary Riders during the 1930’s, people who patrolled and maintained fences in the vast expanse of the Western Australian outback. There was something about this solitary existence that I felt resonated with the song and the deep sense of isolation in Paul’s lyrics brought this into focus.””

US GIRLS – “RUNNING ERRANDS”

Meg Remy calls this two-track US Girls single a “musical ouroboros experiment,” two sides of the same coin that works in elements from albums Half Free, Scratch It, and more. “[It] is a song that consumes its own tail, never wholly free (Half Free, you could say…), never wholly bound, forever changing as it repeats.”

ADAM GREEN – “FALLING AROUND”

Adam Green is back with a new EP, Falling Around, which is out now via Average Cabbage Records. “What you have here are late-night living room recordings,” says Green. “Transmissions from a cozy wooden room, where a great time was had with friends. I think we documented some really special moments. I wish every day sounded like this EP.” Here’s the title track.

EKKO ASTRAL – “HORSEGLUE”

DC post-punks Ekko Astral have shared a new single, “Horseglue,” a track that takes them into noise rock territory as they deliver what singer Jael Holzman calls “a screeching call for moral clarity.” Read her accompanying essay for much more about the song’s backstory.

TUNNG – “ANORAKS”

“One of the ways we write songs in Tunng is that Mike [Lindsay] sends me a musical track and I write a melody and lyric over it”, says Sam Genders explaining this new Tunng single. “That was our plan with this but for reasons I can’t explain Mike’s beautiful piece of music didn’t immediately inspire a song in the way it usually might. I was about to send it back and suggest we turn it into an instrumental but then the story popped into my head. It fell in a bit like a dream… faster than I was able to write it down. It’s a little different to what we usually do so I was slightly nervous to send it to him. Luckily he liked it and asked for a chorus.”

MEI SEMONES – “KURAYAMI” B/W “GET USED TO IT”

Mei Semones follows up this year’s excellent debut LP with this new single that are further examples of her fizzy mix of tropicalia and mathy indie rock.

MIDDLEMAN – “THE FURTHEST PLACE”

London DIY indie rockers Middleman have announced their debut album, Following the Ghost, which will be out February 13. Says the band’s Noah Alves of the first single: “On the packaging of Love Hearts sweets, the words in the hearts read together: ‘My all true love blue eyes don’t cry’. I thought it had a nice rhythm and sounded like a cool power pop love song.” The lyrics changed in the end becoming “I can fall enough to lose sight of the sky.”

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS – “WILD GOD” (LIVE GOD)

Check out a track from Nick Cave’s new live album.

ANNABELLE CHAIRLEGS – “CONCRETE TREES”

Annabelle Chairlegs, aka Austin-based singer-songwriter Lindsey Mackin, has announced her third album, Waking Up, which will be out January 30 via TODO, the label co-founded by rock photographer Pooneh Ghana, Simon Halliday, and Meesh Halliday. The album was produced by Ty Segall at his Harmonizer Studio in Topanga Canyon.
