Jeff Tweedy & sons joined Yo La Tengo for Hanukkah Night 6 (pics, setlist)

“I live here now,” Jeff Tweedy told to the crowd at Bowery Ballroom on Friday night. A famous Chicagoan, Jeff still resides and has a studio there, but he has been in NYC a lot recently, on a solo tour and with Golden Smog. Everyone at Bowery Ballroom was very happy to have him there that night for Night 6 of Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah celebration.

Jeff was the surprise opener (he also did it in 2017 and 2010) and he had his sons Spencer and Sammy in tow. Jeff said this was the debut performance from The Raccoonists, not counting their basement. The set was mostly from Jeff’s new triple solo album Twilight Override, and it ended in appropriate NYC fashion with “Lou Reed Was My Babysitter.”

The Tweedys then stuck around for Yo La Tengo’s entire set, with Jeff on guitar and vocals, Spencer on drums and vocals, and Sammy on keyboards and vocals. The Night 6 set opened with “More Stars Than There Are In Heaven,” and also included “The Lie & How We Told It,” “Did I Tell You?,” and covers of Dylan’s “Love Minus Zero/No Limit” and George McCrae’s “You Can Have it All,” and Jeff sang lead on his and Mavis Staples’ “You Are Not Alone.”  The night ended with “Tom Courtenay” and “I Heard You Looking.”

Everyone was also around for the all-Herman’s Hermits encore, opening with “I’m Into Something Good” and including “Hold On,” “Just A Little Bit Better,” “No Milk Today,” and “My Reservation’s Been Confirmed.” What a treat!. Check out both Yo La Tengo’s setlist (via Jesse Jarnow’s Frank & Earthy blog) and Jeff Tweedy’s below.

Of course, there was more. Jo Firestone was making her third YLT Hanukkah appearance. She told the crowd that millennial women were either a “girl boss” or “woke baby” and she had decided stop being a woke baby and would now be a girl boss. She then welcomed to the stage nine Gen X men volunteers (how did she find so many at this show?) to form a MENorah. She gave each an LED candle and the lighting occurred accordingly.

Other Night 6 stats: YLT’s Georgia Hubley made the mix CD and proceeds from the evening benefitted Mary Mitchell Family & Youth Center. Check out photos from the whole night by Ellen Qbertplaya below.

Only two nights left! Catch up on our Yo La Tengo Hanukkah 2025 coverage here.
