Folk Bitch Trio tell us about the influences behind their debut LP ‘Now Would Be a Good Time’

Melbourne band Folk Bitch Trio‘s debut album Now Would Be a Good Time is out today via Jagjaguwar. Stream it, and read our Notable Releases review, below. To celebrate its release, we asked Heide Peverelle, Jeanie Pilkington, and Gracie Sinclair to tell us about five of the musical influences behind the album, and you can watch them do that below.

We also caught their recent official first headlining NYC show, which happened on Tuesday night (7/22) at Night Club 101 (they also did an instore performance a couple days earlier at Honeymoon Coffee in Ridgewood on Sunday) with support from Bloomsday. It was a treat to get such an intimate live preview of Now Would Be a Good Time, and the room was spellbound by their harmonies, which were even more goosebump-inducing in person. You can see pictures from that below.

Folk Bitch Trio will be supporting Whitney on tour soon, including an Asbury Park, NJ show at The Stone Pony on August 10. See all dates below.

FOLK BITCH TRIO – NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME REVIEW

Right from the name Folk Bitch Trio, you know what you’re getting: a trio of women with a knack for folk music and a great sense of humor. If you’re anything like me, the name alone sucked you in and the Melbourne group’s music delivered. Longtime friends Heide Peverelle, Jeanie Pilkington, and Gracie Sinclair started singing together in 2019, and the lush harmonies on their debut album Now Would Be a Good Time are so beautiful and natural, a testament to that friendship. Paired with acoustic instrumentation, they have a timeless quality, simple but compelling and resonant. They cite Gillian Welch, their labelmates Bonny Light Horseman, Big Thief, Aldous Harding, and Wilco as influences, which is a good summation of their vibe, while Phoebe Bridgers said that the trio’s early single “Edie” reminded her of “Boygenius if it was from the ’40s or something.” It’s that blend of vintage charm and modern edge that makes their music so compelling.
