Remember Tina Turner’s 2021 catalog sale? Over four years later, Pophouse has taken a stake in the IP as part of “a strategic transaction” with the original buyer, BMG.

BMG and Pophouse disclosed their sub-deal today, after the former company in October 2021 unveiled an agreement with Turner. And as described by BMG then, the play extended to the two-time Rock Hall of Fame inductee’s “artist’s share of her recordings, her music publishing writer’s share, neighboring rights and name, image, and likeness.”

Back to the present, Pophouse has become “an owner alongside BMG in the music interests” of Turner, including on both the catalog and all-important NIL sides.

And while the involved parties didn’t divulge hard ownership percentages, they did spell out that Pophouse is now “the majority owner in the music interests of Tina Turner.”

Moving forward, BMG, Pophouse, and the Turner estate alike are expected to collaborate “on long-term stewardship and contribute creative ideas that respect and laud Tina Turner’s artistry.”

Admittedly, this overview is light on concrete details and specifics about what prompted the BMG-Pophouse partnership. Though we’ll have to wait for definitive answers, it’s worth reiterating Björn Ulvaeus-founded Pophouse’s expertise in hologram concerts – including but not limited to a forthcoming KISS show.

At the top level, these avatar concerts are dependent on the aforementioned NIL rights and, more generally, the support of the relevant professionals (or their estates). ABBA leaned in to make Voyage a reality, KISS is coordinating with Pophouse on its own hologram series, and as noted, the Turner estate is onboard here.

In any event, if a Tina Turner hologram show is in the cards, Pophouse isn’t ready to announce as much. CEO Jessica Koravos in a statement only touched on plans for “a series of creative projects.”

“I am thrilled to welcome Tina Turner’s iconic catalogue to the Pophouse family,” said Koravos, who signed on as Pophouse’s head in January. “We will now set in motion a series of creative projects to celebrate Tina Turner’s remarkable music and persona and secure her legacy as the Queen of Rock n’ Roll.”

And on the opposite end of the transaction, BMG’s president for the UK, continental Europe, and APAC, Alistair Norbury, touted the Queen of Rock’s career accomplishments.

“Tina Turner’s voice and spirit shaped modern music and popular culture,” said Norbury. “Our responsibility, alongside Pophouse and the Estate, is to ensure her work continues to resonate with audiences around the world, while remaining true to the strength, independence and originality that defined her career.”
